CCCESD/CDDGC ENROLMENT REPORT FOR 2001/2002

INTRODUCTION

The response this year has been far better than for a number of years; the following Table gives details of which departments are in the data base, and of the reporting situation. Because of the almost complete response, it is possible to produce, with some confidence, tables for the year showing the distribution by subdiscipline, region and (in most cases) by sex. The breakdown by sex is reliable for Table 2 (faculty and support staff), for Table 3 (graduate student registrations and graduations) and for graduations at the B.SC. level Table (1); the breakdown for undergraduate registrations is not shown since too many departments do not give these data. Table 4 shows graduate student registrations and graduations by discipline area and region.

Analysis

After inspecting the web sites of those departments that did not report this year, it was felt that including the data last reported for those departments would not distort the picture significantly.

As can be seen from Figure 1 the downward trend in undergraduate program registrations continues, the slight increase in service course registrations, Figure 2 may be only temporary while the long term trend in registrations for graduate work is relatively steady, as are graduations from the graduate programmes, Figure 3. Because of the downward trend in undergraduate registrations it is expected that the current upward trend in graduations at the Bachelor's level Figure 3 will reverse in the next few years. The numbers of faculty and Post-Doctoral Associates/Fellows remain relatively steady and even the steady decline in support staff numbers may have been arrested, at least temporarily (Figures 5 and 6 shows the 3-yr running average of the ratio of numbers of registered to graduated students each year; when averaged over a period of time this is a macro-indicator of time in the program.

As mentioned earlier, many returns did not show the numbers of male and female registrations at the undergraduate level, nor the Canadian versus visa student numbers at the graduate level, so no attempt has been made to analyse numerically what was returned. However, it is quite evident that the proportion of visa students is down quite significantly from a few years ago.
